It was actually
our patients who prompted us to start thinking about producing an orthotic
that was superior in its ability to provide both support and cushioning,
yet feel immediately comfortable to wear.
We looked carefully at the athletic shoe industry and how they were evolving. It made good sense to apply the semi-compressed, pre-moulded, fabric covered, foam technology principles to the Footbionics® design.
So…. several years in the making and over 10,000 patients and orthoses later….we have done it! An exceptionally comfortable range of orthotic devices that still provides excellent motion control.

Footbionics® orthoses are constructed from a unique blend of Polyethylene (PE) and EVA foams (PEEVA). The EVA is the same foam that is used in most athletic shoe midsoles and provides a soft bouncy feel to the wearer. EVA offers excellent shock absorption properties. PE is a more rigid type of foam that has good shape retention and provides some rigidity to the orthoses particularly for motion control. A perfect mix - the two different foams when blended are the ideal combination for both shock absorption and motion control.
Footbionics® orthoses are compression moulded – the same method used in athletic shoe midsole construction. Moulding the foam under pressure has been shown to greatly enhance the foams shape and durability, thus improving both fit and feel.
The design shape of the orthotic is critical. Orthoses have recently come under the spotlight, particularly with the windlass theory highlighting that allowing first ray plantar flexion is now critical during the stance phase. We have developed a shape that allows more freedom of 1st ray plantar flexion so as to facilitate windlass. In doing this we have designed a shape that is extremely well tolerated and minimises the risk of arch irritation.
Footbionics® orthoses are covered in a durable “polo knit” material which is commonly used in athletic shoe insoles. This greatly improves foot hygiene as well as comfort and feel. This cover also ensures that blistering and surface sweat is reduced so overall the orthotic has a fresher feel.
Ultrafresh® an antibacterial and antifungal agent is also used in all of our orthoses. This is commonly used in the footwear industry and helps to reduce odour and to improve hygiene. Textured insoles have been shown in recent studies to greatly enhance foot proprioception as opposed to using smooth foam materials.
